Cardio-tennis will be starting next week for our members and everyone is welcomed to try it out for free the first time. It's a great opportunity to keep the tennis up during those winter months, while mixing it with some fitness and doubles drills at the end of each session.
These will be run by Sunnyhills head coach Gabriel Hernandez, on Mondays and Thursdays 7.30pm for 1hr, These are fast-paced sessions, which are great to work on for overall fitness (upper & lower-body strength, speed, footwork, etc), however, players can do it at their own pace as well.
Also, we try to hit as many balls in the hour session, trying to cover all shots. Some tennis experience is needed, but this is not a technical class. All members are welcomed to try it for FREE for the first time, just TXT/email: Gabriel to arrange it (only up to 6 players per session) 02102599086 - gabrielhernandeztennis at gmail.com
The amazing late summer we have had is almost finished although the warm days are set to continue. This is the weather that the Gods of tennis ordered and we have been taking full advantage for months now…
The club days are always busy and the games organisers have been scratching their heads to ensure everyone is happy with the games and we do not wait around.
The people that like to play singles have another option now with organised play on Monday evenings from 7pm and 8pm on a new format (more details below in this email).
The club day changes and will be on Saturdays from the 13th April 2019 due to winter Interclub on Sundays morning.
Vets and Midweek ladies
The vets program is going very strong with turnout of up to 40 players and also members from other local clubs coming over…. word is out that this little club has a great thing going.
Elizabeth and Chick are running the board volunteering twice a week, big thank you to both of them making such a successful days tennis for all.
Midweek ladies are busy too with new members and strong games.
Juniors and Intermediates
We've had a steady turn out of about 20-25 under 11's and about on average 10-12 intermediates on Saturdays. They are improving nicely and quite a few expressed their interest in catching up for some games in the winter months. The last junior coaching session will be on Saturday 13/04/19 from 9-11AM.
There will be an Easter Egg hunt and fun games for all followed by a shared morning tea. Please bring a plate to share.
The new season will begin on the first weekend in September 2019.
Note that your access card will still be active, so do come down for a hit and keep in touch with us. We will be looking at ways to keep the kids interested in tennis and we are talking with Tim and might still have some sessions in the winter if there are enough of you interested.
The Court time for junior training members is dedicated only for them, so just a gentle reminder that the courts are solely for junior coaching on Saturday mornings between 9-11am.
Other players, siblings or parents on the court can be disruptive and a potential hazard.
We have a few junior tennis rackets for sale, some are brand new and at very good prices, please come and see Sue or Tim if you are interested. You can talk to Tim and get his opinion to ensure you get the right size.
Tim wanted to share how much he enjoys coaching the current group of Koru kids and how much potential there is in the groups.
Thanks also to our assistant coaches – Haree and Katie.
Our coach, Tim, is available for extra coaching, individual or small groups…. Please use the contact form for more details.
Gabriel, the coach from Sunnyhills, will also be coaching at Koru in the winter months and we are also accommodating Kiwitennis classes on certain evenings.
There will be also cardio tennis and individual coaching so check out the notice boards at the club if you are interested or talk to Tim.
The facilities upgrade is almost complete. The new toilet facilities, the new bar, weatherboard cladding, new fridge and repairs, upgraded plumbing, new security alarm and monitoring and other works will give us a club to really be proud of. We will organise a working bee in a final push to get the club cleaned up and then it will be time for a party… Details to be confirmed soon.
One of the improvements is the access to the WC when club is closed. Please bring your access card to the club so we can add the access rights. Note that when the club is open the outer door is disabled and the access to that WC becomes possible only from inside the club.
Note that we have now EftPos facilities so you do not need to carry cash all the time.
The summer Interclub is almost finished, with only some rain out games still to be played.
The second men team came in 3rd place.
The Ferrier Cup won again with 8 points in front of a strong opposition. Well done Utu and his great team.
The presidents Grade A team are in 2nd place 2 points behind Pakuranga and one catch up game to play.

Open men 7 still have 3 catch up games to lift them up towards the middle of the table.

Fisher Cup & Cucksey Shield
Sunday 7 April 2019
Host Club: Cockle Bay
Also games will be played at Koru, good luck to out teams. These are annual tournaments in which all the local clubs compete, your support is appreciated, see you at the club.
Health And Safety
We would like you to stay healthy and enjoy your tennis. With winter coming and wet days please be mindful that the tennis balls can be wet, heavier and courts can be slippery. We continue to have the courts groomed and to ensure the drainage is clear and optimal. Please ensure you wear the right tennis shoes and that you warm up properly before starting the play. Running shoes are not providing the same support as purposely made tennis shoes and your risk for injury is much higher. Please contact the coach or a committee member if you are unsure of what is the best equipment to use, not just the right racket for you…
New Club Day - Monday Singles
This club day has a special format: you need to register and if you want to play you need to book a session. The sessions are for 1 hour from 7 pm and 8 pm. The game format is best of 9 games or whatever game format you can fit in your 1 hour session.

Hope everyone is enjoying the long HOT summer so far, it’s just about too hot to play tennis but the club has enjoying good attendance across all sections, with most people making the most of the fine weather.
If you have been down to the club lately you will have noticed the upgrade to the amenities in progress.
We would like to thank you for your patience and consideration while this work has been done and we expect it to be completed on schedule in the next two weeks.
On completion we will have an extra shower and toilet, with one toilet being able to be accessed by members externally with their swipe card. This is for players to use who are playing outside organised club play. It is a full renovation of the area so everything will be new!
A big thank you is extended to the Trillian Trust for contributing a grant of $35,000 towards the project and Dick Garratt for facilitating it.

The Interclub enters the final stages and we are doing very well:
The interclub results show during club days as well. The competitiveness and the number of participating members is high and the caliber of tennis is definitely higher than previous years.
We would like to congratulate you all on these fine results. Also we would like to thank the dedicated members that clean up and prepare the food so we can show what Koru hospitality is all about.
Koru Tennis clubmembers win Gold at the Tennis NZ Seniors Individual Chanpionships. Congratulations to:
What a summer we are having!
We enter the last month of summer with a bit of rain but we are not complaining. In fact, we will have another hot month going close to 40°C again in a week time, then a cold rainy day or so and a hot second half of the month.
The scorcher temperatures did not stop the club days, some training for the Interclub start, some living up to their new year resolution or purely enjoying each other’s company.
This year we will have a big party, 50 years of Koru. The formed subcommittee have started looking at what the festivity will look like and how we will celebrate our milestone. Please help the committee with history and photos, contacts for estranged members and Koru friends.
Big thanks to Dick for the 50th anniversary sign for the nets, they look great.
Seniors Doubles Club Champs will be held on Sunday 11th February 9am. Guaranteed two games, all levels of play welcome, names on notice board at club or call or text Steve Morris 021688455 by Wednesday 7th February.

Mixed club champs will be held on Sunday 11th March.
Junior club days will recommence on Thursday 8th Feb at 6pm and Saturday 10th Feb 8.30am.
Do you use plastic cups at the club? We decided to only purchase eco-smart cups from now on. However, to help reduce the usage of plastic cups in the club we encourage people to re-use their cup during a session or use the mugs and glasses in the club rooms.
