Well winter has arrived with a vengeance – it’s a bit of a challenge getting time on court at the moment. Just a reminder senior club day is now on Saturdays from 1pm.
Sad news
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Roberts a previous Koru Club member.
Many of our older members will fondly remember John and Jill Roberts who were members of Koru from the 2005/2006 season through to 2016/2017 when they retired to Whangamata. Both Jill & John represented Koru Tennis Club at interclub level over many seasons. John’s nickname was apparently ‘Crickey’ which is what he would say on court frequently when he missed a shot! We have sent flowers on behalf of Koru and send our sincere sympathies to Jill and family.
Senior Prizegiving
The Senior prizegiving will take place on Saturday 20th May from 6.30pm onwards.
All are welcome to attend, finger food will be available and hopefully dancing later in the evening! Sign up on the sheet on the board and let us know you are coming. It’ll be a fun night to celebrate our Champions!
Lavie Series Junior Tournaments
We are delighted to announce that we are partnering with Sunnyhills Club in term 2 to host 3 junior Lavie Series tournaments. These are prestigious junior tournaments designed to create a pathway for young developing players to progress to touring professionals. To encourage junior participation from our club we are subsidizing 50% of the entry fee for up to 3 juniors each tournament.
The first tournament is scheduled for Sunday 28th May, so if you want to watch some top-class junior play come along to the club for an hour or so. We would remind members this means the courts will be unavailable until after 4.30pm on that day.
Cucksey Shield
Unfortunately, the recent bad weather meant the postponement of the annual Cucksey Shield & Fisher Cup which was scheduled for Sunday 30 April. It has been re-scheduled for Sunday 21st May and Koru will be represented by a team of 6 men & 6 women in the Cucksey Shield. Unfortunately, Koru TC will not be fielding a Fisher Cup team this year. For those not playing, you're welcome to come along to the following venues to support Koru on the day.
- Sunnyhills – Cucksey 1s & 2s
- Cockle Bay – Cucksey 3s & 4s
- Howick – Cucksey 5s & 6s
We are aware that the backend of courts 3 & 4 (i.e., behind the baseline under the tree canopy) are especially slippery in this wet weather. We have very recently water blasted and sprayed them yet again and are currently doing this on a monthly basis. Although this removes the majority of the moss and mould growing there it is not shifting completely and still remains hazardous. We will be spraying again but in the wet weather that area is constantly in the shade of the trees, and we would remind members to be as careful as they can when playing on these courts. It is helpful to also try to remove the leaves that gather frequently at the back of the courts as this makes the area safer.
Shout out
A big shout out to two of our members (Eric Schwerzel & John Spray) who noticed the graffiti on the fence and just got on and removed it. Also, to Richard Poole who frequently takes time to clear the leaves at the back of the courts. Our club is all the better for such kind and generous people.
